Herbarium

The herbarium helps to identify and conserve plant diversity, and to train students and researchers in tropical botany.

UMR EcoFoG's working herbarium enables researchers to identify tree and shrub species with certainty from among the more than 900 species collected in the herbarium (out of the more than 1,800 tree species in French Guiana).

Botanist Giacomo Sellan (CIRAD) manages the collections and identifies tree samples from the Guyafor network and ALT project plots (trees over 1 cm in diameter). He is accompanied on this mission by a team of forestry technicians: Michel Baisie, Sarah Djo, Olan Jackie, Petrus Naisso, Jorian Octavie and Alpha Odan.

Each year, several students are trained in the identification of tropical tree flora, and several projects make use of the herbarium, where the 3,270 samples from all over French Guiana are divided into 78 plant families.
